In The Wild

Explore amazing places to stay in Scotland

For real escape, go wild. Our In The Wild collection is made up of remote cottages, bothies and cabins in some of Scotland’s emptiest places, at the end of farm tracks, on remote peninsulas and on islands with few neighbours. Expect red deer, eagles and otters, dark skies and no traffic. Some are off-grid and some take effort to reach, which is part of the point. Book direct with the owner and check access details before you travel.

Questions and answers

Where are the most remote places to stay in Scotland?

Some of the most remote are on the Knoydart peninsula, which has no road link to the rest of the mainland and is reached on foot or by boat. There you can stay at Knoydart Luxury Lochside Pod. Others include Haunn Cottages, two miles down a farm track on Mull's wild north-west coast, and cottages in Durness, Assynt and on Sanday in Orkney.

Are there secluded self-catering cottages in the Highlands?

Yes. Eagle Rock sits on its own land high on the Applecross peninsula with views to Skye, Craigton Croft House is right on the shore of Loch Carron, and The Brochs at Achiltibuie look out over the mountains and the sea. All are hand-picked and booked direct with the owner.

Can I stay in a secluded cottage on the beach in Scotland?

Yes. Traigh Beach House near Arisaig sits by the white sands of Traigh, Lewis Longhouse is 50 metres from the beach at Coll on the Isle of Lewis, and Kilnbarn Cottage on Sanday in Orkney sits right by the sea with an outdoor bath on the shore.

Are there remote cottages in the Scottish Borders or Dumfries and Galloway?

Yes. Hearthstanes Steading is a group of 1600s stone cottages on a working hill farm in the Tweedsmuir Hills, with the River Tweed running alongside. In Dumfries and Galloway, Kirkdale Port has a private shoreline on the Solway Firth, and the cottages at Carrick Shore sit on a quiet bay near Gatehouse of Fleet.

Can I have an off-grid holiday in Scotland?

Yes. The Boathouse near Tomich is an off-grid bothy for two, powered by wind and solar, with a lochside hot tub, a private fishing loch and a boat. Our Off-Grid collection has more.

Are there remote log cabins in Scotland?

The Hideaway Lodges are Scandinavian-style log cabins for two in Drumlang Woods on Mull, with deer, otters and eagles nearby. Forsa Lodge is a traditional Estonian log lodge in private woodland on Mull's Glenforsa Estate.

Can I bring my dog to a remote cottage?

Most cottages in this collection welcome dogs, including the cottages at Traigh near Arisaig, Hearthstanes Steading and the Mackay's cottages in Durness. Check each listing for the number of dogs allowed and any charges.

Can I rent a remote cottage long term?

Some owners accept longer stays, particularly outside the summer season. Because you book direct, you can ask the owner about longer lets, monthly rates or winter availability before you book.
