About this listing

Escape to the these wonderfully wild yet intimate  shepherds huts on the magical Isle of Skye; set between magnificent mountains and the Isle of Rum on a peaceful croft offering hut and breakfast off the beaten track – make friends with Gilbert and George their 2 gorgeous donkeys.

A pair of gorgeous handcrafted shepherd huts await you on this peaceful croft in Heaste on Skye. Janet’s Shepherd Huts are in perfect alignment with its wildly romantic location, on this magical island.

Soul inspiring views for two

Wake up beautifully, with the best window to Skye offering soul inspiring views and the lovat green, heather and bronze golden hued Skye hills. Step outside your front door and look up – there’s no light pollution here and you’ll drink in an ocean of stars while tracing lipstick sunsets across the water and star trails that will take your breath away. Meet the donkeys Gilbert and George who just love a little attention and enjoy sharing their views for two with you.

Sleeping 2, each hut is dressed with natural materials and beautifully cosy inside. Step outside onto your own neat gravelled hut driveway with seating area for 2. A hybrid continental breakfast is provided to your hut and included in your stay – for guests seeking to prepare a full cooked breakfast they can make use of the catering kitchen facilites on site. The shower and toilet are close by down the white pebble path from your hut and each of the huts sleeps two in a double bed. Plenty of hot water and electricity and drying facilities provided for your stay. Bathrooms include the main toilet and shower room at the house and the second w.c is over in the “Big Shed”. Bothan Buidheag is set further back into the croftland where Gilbert and George the donkeys hang out while Bothan Beileag the second hut is the more easily accessible of the two huts and sits by the drive. You can park car directly by Bothan Beilag or park by the house and take the pacth across to Bothan Buidheag (20 metres). Each hut has its own firepit and bbq area for guests use. A complimentary continental breakfast is included in your stay or alternatively you can opt for a cooked breakfast for an additional charge. For guests looking for a totally self-catered option, this is available in the form of the Big Shed, a well-equipped, open plan kitchen and lounge area open to guests for a small charge. The huts themselves have their own kettle and a fold down table the right size for a dinner for two or board games.

Walk, bike, kayak, and relax

Walking routes range from easy ambles along the coast, to challenging scrambles taking in the Cuillin range. Make like Danny Macaskill, mountain-biking country is all around you and if its sea kayaking you are after it’s just on your doorstep. Janet your host is a true animal lover and makes sure her four legged guests are just as comfortable as her humans. The huts are designed to take pets (up to two) on request and there are lots of beach runs and walks to enjoy together. A car is essential once on Skye as public transport is limited and there is no other way to get to Heaste but the journey is one of the most rewarding.  The nearest airport is Inverness, nearest train station Kyle of Lochalsh, and there is a bus service from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Broadford, where you can hire a car. There is secure storage for bikes at the huts. Janet will provide you with detailed maps, guides and a wealth of local information on scenic spots, gin and whisky distilleries, local information and graded walks for all abilities.

Skye Shepherd Huts have been designed to embrace the stunning Skye landscape in every direction and in all seasons. You’d be forgiven for not wanting to leave but if it’s adventures your after Skye’s an incredibly fascinating destination. Visit the Magical Fairy Pools, Cuillin Ridge, Armadale Castle and Garden Grounds. Read up on Gavin Maxwell ‘s Ring of Bright Water and his family of otters or visit his museum. Foot tapping traditional music nights both at Sabhal Mor Ostaig, the Gaelic College and traditional pubs dotted along the old roads are the perfect end to your Hebridean stay.

Reviews:

“Our stay at Bothan Buidheag was truly exceptional, our only wish is that we could have stayed longer! Janet’s warm and welcoming style immediately made us feel at home and her breakfast was delicious. The hut itself was cosy, with everything that you could need to be comfortable. The little touches such as the many animals around the hut – donkeys, chickens, and more – made the experience particularly memorable. The location was stunning, with panoramic views over to Rum and the surrounding mountains. We could not recommend this place enough. Thank you again!”

“We celebrated our first wedding anniversary here and it was perfect. We couldn’t have asked for anything more, Janet has a great eye for detail and quality which made it feel so special. She was welcoming and always there if you needed her. The donkeys and chickens were great to be near to over the weekend. We truly loved it!”

“We had a wonderful stay in Bothan Buidheag. Janet is a super host and made us feel so welcome. The shepherd’s hut is so well thought-out – it has handy items and home comforts tucked away in every corner – and super-cosy, even in the driechest of Skye weather… Gilbert and George the donkeys make for excellent company too.”

“Our stay was fantastic. The facilities are great and the owner is extremely polite, friendly and helpful. There were lots of animals roaming around that were all very friendly and approachable. This made things feel really natural and rustic which is right up our street. The hut was very comfortable and has everything you would need in such a small, cosy space which is ideal.”

“We had a lovely time staying at the sheperd huts. It was perfectly situated for our plans to explore south skye on the first 2 days of our trip. Janet was a great host.”
