Holiday cottages in the Scottish Highlands

The Highlands cover most of the north of Scotland: mountains, glens, sea lochs, white beaches and some of the emptiest country in Europe. Where you stay shapes your trip, so here's how the areas differ.

Where to stay in the Highlands

Lochaber and the Road to the Isles has Fort William, Glencoe and the white sands of Arisaig and Morar. The Cairngorms and Speyside offer forests, mountains and whisky country around Aviemore and Boat of Garten. Around Inverness and Loch Ness you're central for touring. For wild coast and quiet roads, head north west to Wester Ross, Assynt and Coigach and Sutherland, or east to Ross-shire and the Black Isle.

Getting there

The A9 runs from Perth to Inverness through the Cairngorms, and trains run on the same route. Inverness Airport has flights from across the UK. The North Coast 500 starts and ends in Inverness, and the A82 runs from Glasgow to Fort William.

Questions and answers

Where should I stay in the Scottish Highlands?

For beaches, stay on the Road to the Isles near Arisaig and Morar, at places like Traigh Beach House. For mountains and forests, the Cairngorms, where Highland Holiday Cottages has eight cottages in the national park. For remote coast, the north west, around Lochinver, Achiltibuie and Durness. For touring, Inverness and Loch Ness are central.

Are there large Highland cottages to rent for groups?

Yes. Borrodale House near Arisaig sleeps 16, Mountain Grange in Boat of Garten sleeps 15 and has a Scandinavian sauna, Eagle Rock on the Applecross peninsula sleeps 14, Point Clair House near Fort Augustus sleeps 13, and Onnela Lodge overlooking Loch Kishorn sleeps 10.

Is there self-catering in the north west Highlands?

Yes. In Lochinver, Waterloo Lodge and Highland Haven look over Loch Inver to the Assynt mountains. Near Ullapool, Stonehouses are turf-roofed lodges with saunas, and in Durness the Mackay's cottages are close to the beaches.

Where can I stay in the Cairngorms?

Highland Holiday Cottages is a family-run collection of eight cottages in the Cairngorms National Park. In Boat of Garten, Mountain Grange suits large groups, and Weiroch Lodge is a converted mill on the River Spey on the Ballindalloch Estate.

Are there Highland cottages on the North Coast 500?

Yes, all along the route, from Applecross and Lochinver to Durness and Dornoch. See our North Coast 500 collection for every stay on the route.

Are dogs welcome in Highland cottages?

Most of our Highland cottages welcome dogs, including the Traigh cottages near Arisaig, Highland Holiday Cottages in the Cairngorms and the Mackay's cottages in Durness. Check each listing for the number of dogs allowed and any charges.

How do I get to the Scottish Highlands?

Drive the A9 from Perth to Inverness, or the A82 from Glasgow to Fort William. Trains run to Inverness and Fort William, and Inverness Airport has flights from across the UK.
