About this listing

Stunning location – Fascinating history – Stylish living – Great outdoors

Railway Cottage once home to the stationmaster and signalman at the defunct Killin Junction railway station and now sensitively restored, offers one gorgeous historic cottage and bothy set in the beautiful Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park surrounded by rolling hills, forest, curious wildlife and stunning views of Glen Dochart.

Inside Railway Cottage

Stepping inside you will find beautiful furnishings and home comforts perfect for your holiday.  The stone cottage exudes character with a design and wealth of bespoke features that sensitively respect its fascinating railway history.

A contemporary larch-clad extension provides an architectural contrast, moulding old with new.  Retaining features such as the double height entrance hallway and staircase provides light and space throughout.  New high quality furnishings sit alongside wonderfully curated antique pieces that recall its Victorian and Edwardian past, while framed photographs on the walls speak of its history.  Cosy up beside an enormous open log fire and pad across warm reclaimed wooden floors with underfloor heating.  Double glazed sash and case windows frame spectacular views of the Glen and surrounding forest – perfect to wake up to!

The ground floor living area of the cottage is completely open plan with two sumptuous sofas enjoying fabulous views of Glen Dochart through the double sliding doors that step down on to a large decking.  A re-upholstered Victorian armchair offers the perfect spot to curl up with a good book and for evening entertainment the house is equipped with a Television, DVD/Blu-Ray player (with a library of films) and bluetooth radio/CD player.  Or enjoy reading about the history of the local railway and behold the gallery of old photographs displayed in the hallway.

Railway Cottage has a bespoke hand-built kitchen, island and breakfast bar with distressed merlot red painted furniture and reclaimed wood worktops sprinkled with vintage crockery and other culinary paraphernalia housed in the gorgeous antique dresser.  An induction hob with electric oven, fridge/freezer and dishwasher provide the mod cons.  The breakfast bar enjoys wonderful views of the countryside and if you prefer more formal eating step down to the dining table which enjoys exactly the same views and doors on to the decking.  There’s also a separate utility room with washing machine, which provides ample space for drying boots and coats.

Upstairs there are two double bedrooms with original Victorian brass beds (and an additional small double z-bed). The cottage will comfortably accommodate up to four adults and an additional one or two children on the z-bed in one of the bedrooms.

Centre stage in the bathroom is a double-ended cast iron roll top bath complete with original brass tap ware and complimented by a separate walk-in shower.  There is also a wet room shower downstairs.

Outside, the large decking is accessed via sliding doors from both the living room and dining area.  Stylish garden furniture , a barbecue and wondrous views provide all the ingredients for a chilled relaxing evening watching the sun set.

Please note that tucked away in one corner of the garden there is a large unfenced but netted pond 3m x 3m and 1.5m deep.  Small children should be supervised at all times for their own safety.

The Bothy

There is a separate detached bothy – chill area, kitchenette and separate bathroom together with a sleeping area on a mezzanine level – which sleeps 2-3 and is ideal for teenagers.  The bothy is a separate outbuilding in the corner of the garden which has been custom built to a contemporary design with larch-cladding. Intended as a teenager’s hideaway the bothy appeals to all ages and offers a quiet escape for young and old.

Note the bothy cannot be booked separate from the cottage.

5 Star Location

The property enjoys wonderful views and has been fully renovated to a charming and unique standard. Situated in the beautiful Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park, the Railway Cottage and Bothy enjoy a secluded location surrounded by hills, forest, wildlife and stunning views of Glen Dochart yet is only a short drive from the idyllic village of Killin and the Falls of Dochart.

The property is totally private, accessed via a gated track. The cottage is surrounded by open garden with the original low-level dry-stone wall marking the boundary with the National Park. There are no neighbours here – the area can be explored safe in the knowledge that the only company will be overhead buzzards, pasturing sheep, red squirrels and the occasional inquisitive deer.

Walking and cycling trails are literally on the doorstep – no need to jump in the car before starting your outings!

A National Park and activities galore on your doorstep

Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park covers 720 square miles of lowland landscapes and mountains in Central Scotland.  Railway Cottage is located in the north eastern corner of the park and is approximately 60 and 70 miles north of Glasgow and Edinburgh respectively. The closest community is at the idyllic village of Killin, renowned for its Falls of Dochart, on the edge of Loch Tay. Your cottage is situated at the defunct Killin Junction railway station just a mile from the A85 main trunk road.

Step outside and enjoy many private trails from your front door or head out for a longer walk following the old railway line east to Killin and Loch Tay or perhaps head down Glen Ogle to Balquidder and visit Rob Roy’s grave.  For more experienced hillwalkers Munros and Corbetts await.  The Ben Lawers range and Tarmachan ridge are just the other side of Killin and to the west a short drive takes you to the starting point for the ascent of Ben More and Stob Binnein.  Book a highland safari, cruise on Loch Tay or learn about whisky making at one of the local distilleries.

The fascinating Scottish Crannog centre offers an insight into an iron age dwelling where you can walk in the footsteps of the original Crannog dwellers and immerse yourself in village life with original artefacts; demonstrations of textiles, cooking and ancient crafts & technologies.  Take a tour of an historic castle and its gardens, such as Blair or Doune Castle, immortalised in Outlander as Jamie Fraser’s clan home “Castle Leoch”.

There are plenty of opportunities to book fishing, golf, deer stalking, boating, biking, canoeing, kayaking, white-water rafting, gorge walking or for the even more adventurous, tree top high rope walks.

Railway Cottage offers a tranquil escape for friends, couples and families in the most peaceful of surroundings, with wide open space, total privacy and all the home comforts of a luxury holiday cottage in the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs. National Park.
