Holiday cottages in Ross-shire

Ross-shire stretches right across the north of Scotland, from the Atlantic coast in the west to the Moray Firth in the east. The west is mountains and sea lochs, and the east is gentler farmland and fishing villages, with dolphins in the firth.

Where to stay

On the west coast, Wester Ross has Loch Carron and Poolewe on the North Coast 500, and Dornie sits beside Eilean Donan Castle at the meeting of three sea lochs. On the east coast, Portmahomack is a quiet village on the Tarbat peninsula with a lighthouse at Tarbat Ness, and Tain is home to Glenmorangie distillery. Shandwick is one of the Seaboard villages, known for its Pictish stone.

The Black Isle

The Black Isle, a green peninsula south of the Cromarty Firth, is an easy drive from Inverness, and within reach of the east coast villages. It's known for Chanonry Point, where bottlenose dolphins are often seen from the shore, and the seaside towns of Cromarty and Rosemarkie.

Getting there

Inverness is the gateway for both coasts. The A9 and the Kessock Bridge lead to the Black Isle and on north to Tain, and the A835 and A832 run west to Loch Carron and Poolewe. Trains run from Inverness to Tain and to Kyle of Lochalsh.
