The Blackhouse and The Croft House
A romantic getaway location for couples on a six-acre highland croft. You will love Mint Croft with its two luxury, renovated Hebridean crofter’s cottages on the Isle of Skye called The Blackhouse and The Croft House. Both are traditional in appearance with superb attention to detail, gorgeous soft furnishings and special touches throughout. These two luxurious and relaxing retreats are available to rent separately or together for couples, families or small groups.
The Blackhouse is a renovated Hebridean Blackhouse (c. 1800) with a traditional one metre thick stone wall and traditional turf roof – a cosy cottage perfect for relaxing stays for couples looking to get away from it all and a perfect honeymoon location. Floor to ceiling windows provide the perfect frame for stunning views over Loch Snizort to the islands of Harris and Lewis in the distance. The open plan living and dining area feature a deVol handcrafted kitchen. The entrance hall leads to a Fired Earth designer bathroom with large bath and rainforest drench style shower. The first floor reveals an elevated bedroom; with super-king bed with Egyptian cotton white bed linen, down duvets, pillows and organic Highland toiletries. A sitting room suite also offers uninterrupted views to the beach at Bein an Sguirr and the sea cliffs beyond.
The larger Croft House sleeps up to four guests in a traditional Hebridean croft house built in 1934 by local craftsmen in village stone with stunning panoramic sea views across Loch Snizort to the Ascrib Islands and the Trotternish Ridge. Inside you will find a spacious, slate-floored kitchen and dining area featuring a deVol handcrafted Shaker kitchen and a stunning stone-walled sitting room and library with a crackling wood-burning stove and solid oak floor boards. Upstairs, the two bedrooms have vaulted ceilings with beams in local Douglas Fir and super-king beds (one of which can be converted to two single beds), white Egyptian cotton bed linen, down duvets and pillows and organic Highland toiletries. Relax in the Fired Earth designer bathroom with rainforest drench style showerhead.
Mint Croft is lovingly curated by James and Carolina who are both architects, designers, and makers based across Kenya, Scotland, and Spain.

Mint Croft is surrounded by the spectacular sea views of Loch Snizort stretching out uninterrupted to the islands of Harris and Lewis. Spot Minke Whale, Dolphins and Sea Eagles from the croft. Crofting is traditional, small-scale farming, unique to the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. Mint Croft is a six-acre croft with a share of the common hill-grazing of 920 acres.
Many of the Gaelic place names on Waternish have Norse roots, from the not-so-welcome arrival of the Vikings in 794. Neolithic structures can be found on Waternish and across the island. Known as Scotland’s “Dinosaur Isle”, Skye is rich in fossils from Middle Jurassic era. Culturally, there is a strong tradition of folk music and Gaelic language.
The soul-soothing views from Mint Croft and tranquility of the location are the perfect antedote to a busy life. Walk, talk, relax, explore; there’s plenty to occupy you during your stay. Pack a picnic and head to some of the islands special places. Seek out Flora MacDonald’s memorial, just behind the Museum of Island Life. Scale the Cuillins, visit distilleries, dine out on Michelin stars, try langoustines or hand dived scallops fresh from the local
boats. Visit local exhibitions, studios and galleries galore where you can meet tanners of sheepskins, dyers of wool, weavers and knitters, potters and artists.
