Seaview Lodge

Seaview is a 40ft by 14ft lodge sitting on a croft at Tougal, a hamlet just south of Morar on the west coast. The name is literal. The lodge looks straight out over the white sands of Morar, and a gate at the bottom of the croft takes you onto the beach without touching a road.

Inside there are two bedrooms sleeping four between three beds, one of them on the ground floor. The shower room has a rainfall shower and is reached either from the hallway or directly from the master bedroom, which is useful if you are sharing with people keeping different hours. Blackout curtains in the bedrooms help in June, when it barely gets dark this far north.

The kitchen is fully equipped with a fridge and freezer and a microwave, and there is heating throughout, an iron and ironing board, a hairdryer and a smart TV with streaming. Wi-Fi is superfast. The washing machine is not in the lodge itself, it lives in the garden shed, which is worth knowing before you arrive with a week of wet waterproofs.

Outside there is the garden and croft ground, free parking and secure bike storage. Check-in is self-service, so you can arrive late off the road or the train without waiting for anyone.

The views are the reason to book. Sand and sea in front, hills behind, and on a clear evening the sun goes down behind the Small Isles. There is no light pollution to speak of, so the stargazing on a cold clear night is as good as the daytime view.

Morar sits on the Road to the Isles between Fort William and Mallaig, with Mallaig a short drive north for the fish restaurants and the ferries to Skye, Eigg, Rum, Muck and Canna. Loch Morar, the deepest freshwater loch in Britain, is a couple of minutes inland. The West Highland Line runs through Morar station, so you can get here without a car.
