Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park was Scotland's first national park: Britain's largest lake by surface area, woodland, glens and mountains, all within an hour of Glasgow and not much more of Edinburgh. It's a popular base for walking, cycling, watersports and climbing munros, and quieter than the Highlands proper.
On the loch itself, Inchmurrin is Loch Lomond's largest island, reached by private passenger ferry, with apartments, a lodge and a house. In the Trossachs, Loch Katrine is the heart of the area, known as Scott's Lady of the Lake country. On the edge of the park, the Finnich Estate near Drymen looks across 13 miles of countryside to Ben Lomond. Further north, Killin sits at the head of Loch Tay.
Glasgow is the gateway, and the A82 runs along the western shore of the loch. Drymen, on the south-eastern side, is about 15 miles from Glasgow. Trains run from Glasgow to Balloch, at the southern end of the loch, and to Arrochar and Tarbet on its western shore.
Lochside House and Apartment sit on the shores of Loch Katrine, with room for up to 16 guests in total. Railway Cottage is a restored stationmaster's cottage and bothy at the old Killin Junction station, looking over Glen Dochart. The Craigton Cottages are traditional luxury cottages in the heart of the national park.
The cottages on the Finnich Estate near Drymen look across 13 miles of countryside to Ben Lomond: Birch Cottage and Oak Cottage sleep four, while Rowan Cottage and Sycamore sleep two. They sit in a converted 19th-century sandstone steading, three miles from Drymen.
Yes. The Finnich Estate cottages are about 15 miles from Glasgow, and the Craigton Cottages are in the national park, easy to reach from both Glasgow and Edinburgh.
