High eco credentials and luxury interiors
High eco credentials, luxury interiors and with architectural provenance the Broch of Coigach situated on Scotland’s north west rugged coast are most definitely a ‘bucket list’ destination. Scàl’s Broch and Gille Buidhe’s Broch allow you to experience a different rhythm of life where you can immerse yourself in history, wildlife and relaxation.
The Brochs are named after two brothers who were allegedly the first settlers in Coigach – Gille Buidhe and Scài – and sleep four and two people respectively. Each can be hired separately or together – ideal for family gatherings, special occasions or a romantic escape for tow.
These spectacular turf roofed Brochs are built almost entirely from recycled materials. Salvaged materials from an old Victorian pier, the local landscape, old buildings in the surrounds with the window frames being entirely made from reclaimed pitch pine from the floorboards of a 19th-century Glasgow warehouse. Sitting in four acres of private land at the end of a farm track, they look out on the sea and the mountains – with large windows designed to make the most of this incredible view, and an observation area where you can spot the local wildlife. Sea eagles, porpoises, seals and dolphins are among the residents.
Every comfort is accounted for from the large open light filled rooms, fat boy style cushions on the floor, to the sauna, perfect for relaxing after a day’s adventure on the hills. Panoptical windows let the outside in and the sun fill the rooms. The walls are awash with art from some of Scotland’s leading and inspirational modern artists with works from the likes of Will Maclean and Calum Colvin in each Broch Gille Buidhe’s Broch is the larger of the two Brochs with two spacious bedrooms and two sitting rooms to relax in. There’s a wood burning stove in the main sitting room perfect for gathering round in the evening, a fully fitted kitchen and a contemporary dining area. Scàl’s Broch with its double bedroom is the perfect romantic hideaway for couples with all the same attention to details as Gille Buidhe.
Wildlife, walking and relaxation
The hardest choice will be how you tear yourself way from your Broch to go and explore the surrounding landscape as little has hanged in a few thousand years and the scenery is jaw-dropping. There’s no TV to distract you, which is in keeping with the sanctuary that the Brochs create for its guests for pure relation – although there is good Wi-Fi if you need to stay in touch with the world outside. Deserted beaches, romantic strolls, wildlife and walking will tempt you from all directions. The light changes all the time and lends itself beautifully to watercolours and photography, when the view never looks the same twice. Wildlife watching from your Broch brings all kinds of guests from sea eagles, porpoises, seals and dolphins making a show in the skies and waters close by.

“We were looking for somewhere to relax and enjoy fabulous scenery. We got fabulous scenery, fabulous lodgings, awesome art and time to appreciate it. Thank you for having the vision and then letting us experience it!”
“Scàl’s Broch will always have a special place in the hearts of my fiancée and I, as it’s where I asked her to marry me as she watched a little bunny munch while seated at the expansive windows overlooking the bay. Thank you for hosting us and being a part of a lifelong memory.”
