About this listing
Cuttieshillock strikes the perfect balance between rugged adventure and absolute comfort, nestled in a private 30,000-acre estate in Aberdeenshire, this historic Scottish house can sleep up to six guests and includes access to a private wood-burning sauna. Included with Cuttieshillock is a large out-building complete with wood-burner that is perfect for writers, artists, and even just spending time together. Your furry companions can come along as up to two dogs are welcome.
Although the house itself may be ancient, it is furnished inside with vibrant colors, an abundance of natural light, and an effortlessly curated mix of antique and modern decor. As this house was once an inn — soldiers rested here before a battle in the Jacobite Rebellion nearly 300 years ago — you can feel the connection to Scotland’s rich history while still enjoying modern creature comforts.
You will be able to enjoy open fireplaces — one of which still has the swing-arm for a kettle — in both the dining room and living room. Firewood is provided at no additional charge. Cooking is a breeze in the spacious kitchen with a gas hob, cooker, and pizza oven. To create your own local culinary masterpieces, produce and eggs from the Glen Dye garden are available for purchase just a short 3 mile hop away at the main hub at the Bridge of Dye. For al fresco cooking, you will also have access to a Big Green Egg. Of course, if you would prefer not to cook on your holiday, you can order delivery from four eateries. Because there is no television, everyone in your party can relish being together and enjoy the sounds of nature.
Plenty of adventures wait as soon as you step out the door. On the estate, you can hike scenic trails and take in the breath-taking views of Clachnaben and the northern side of the Cairn O’ Mount mountain pass. In addition to exhilarating trails, your party can also enjoy the historic surroundings in the bring-your-own-drink Glen Dye Arms pub. The antique bar, roaring fireplace, and record player in the Glen Dye Arms are the perfect ingredients to build memories that will last forever. With the trails, out-building, sauna, Glen Dye Arms, as well as the comfortable house, there is plenty to do without ever leaving the grounds.
Because it is surrounded by wild forest and hills, it can be easy to forget that Cuttieshillock is only a 45-minute drive from the coast. For those who feel a holiday is not complete without a day at a sandy beach, St Cyrus Beach offers picturesque craggy cliff paths and three miles of sandy dunes. Nearby, you will find the charming village of Stonehaven where your party can enjoy a heated open-air swimming pool complete with sun terraces as well as a splash pad. A short hike (or cycle ride) from Stonehaven, the dramatic Dunnottar Castle is an unmissable stop. This castle routinely ranks among the best in Scotland, and even inspired the castle in the Disney film “Brave.”
Also nearby is Crathes Castle, which features painted ceilings, picturesque gardens with hedges planted 300 years ago, and a zip line adventure on the grounds. For those who unwind best on (or in) the water, Knockburn Loch offers watersports like stand-up paddling, kayaking, open-water swimming, and sailing. Experience the thrills of fly-fishing at Raemoir Trout Fishery. Even if you are an inexperienced fisher, you can book a session with an instructor to take part in this ancient tradition.
Whether your party prefers to relax by staying in or venturing out, Cuttieshillock has something for everyone. On the grounds, your party can unwind by taking panoramic hikes, luxuriating in a soothing sauna, enjoying privacy in a heated out-building, connecting in the Glen Dye Arms, cooking in the outdoors, and, of course, rejuvenating in the house itself. If you venture beyond the Glen Dye grounds, those in your party can explore the highlands or the beach, visit two impressive castles, and learn something new like fly-fishing or kayaking. Cuttieshillock makes it possible to soak up Scottish culture in the finest comfort.
