About this listing

Stargaze under twinkling Hebridean skies, stroll deserted white sand beaches or cuddle up by a wood burning stove – this stunning Hebridean hideaway for two is the perfect escape where magical standing stones, wildlife and flower filled machairs await you.

Your Hebridean hideaway with a magical Afghan connection!

Timsgarry Byre exudes calm and tranquillity, a Hebridean hideaway in the tiny hamlet of Timsgarry on the doorstep of Uig Beach, overlooking breath-taking scenery of mountains and machair. Exquisite attention to detail, high standard finishes throughout and local craftsmanship combine traditional heritage of the croft with contemporary design. Your stay at Timsgarry combines the romance of the Hebrides, beautiful furnishings, designer build credentials and an interesting connection between Uig in Lewis and Afghanistan. On a quiet loop road, Timsgarry is within a few minutes walk from the beach, local shop, community centre with café and the Uig Sands restaurant. Relax in front of the wood-burning stove in the open plan living area dotted with beautiful Georgian and Victorian furniture, and Congolese Masks and Afghan rugs collected by their daughter Linda during her time in both Afghanistan and Uganda. At night stretch out in the raised super king bed with high spec Hypnos mattress and down topper. The bedroom can be configured as a twin on request and the conical ceiling and panoptical curved windows provide breath-taking views overlooking the beach.

The kitchen has everything you could possibly need for your stay; bone china crockery, granite worktops, induction hob, electric oven/grill, toaster, kettle, fridge, ice maker, microwave and oak finish throughout. There’s a wet tiled bathroom with shower and oodles of hot water, Quartzite wall tiles, marble surround and under floor heating so you can pad across warm travertine flooring. Externally this traditional stone built house is finished with corrugated aluminium cladding with slate and corrugated roofs. Designed in conjunction with local award winning architect Stuart Bagshaw, the owners have thoughtfully kept the original layout as much as possible, which is that of a main byre with extensions to either end having varying roof heights and pitches, finished both in slate and corrugated iron. Green credentials at Timsgarry include air source heat pump and under floor heating with special consideration to the lighting, mostly low voltage efficient LED lights with tiny LED up-lighters to each window. The property enjoys unlimited broadband Wi-Fi, with Wi-Fi radio, and the television can be set up if requested with Internet access and freesat connections. Relax on the sofa or in the stressless reclining chair with footstool and pick up one of the curated collection of books available for guests use during their Hebridean escape. For the more adventurous there are two electric bikes, fishing gear on request and even two body boards for when the surf is up. For a more relaxed day out head for deserted beaches, archaeology tours, golf, walking or wildlife spotting where Red Deer, Otters, Sea Eagles, Golden Eagles are just a few of the local residents you might see in Uig.

The Linda Norgrove Foundation

Income from Timsgarry Byre is donated to the lindanorgrovefoundation.org, by the owners of the property and parents of Linda Norgrove. A registered charity which aims to help women and children affected by the war in Afghanistan, LNF continues the work of their daughter who worked for the World Wildlife Fund and the United Nations in Peru, Laos, and then Afghanistan. In 2010, she was kidnapped by the Taliban and was killed in a botched rescue attempt by US special forces. Income from the Byre pays for the UK running costs so that every pound donated gets to Afghanistan, hopefully levering further donations to support those who have never known peace and live in the poorest country in the world outside Africa. The Foundation gives small grants to local charities and awards scholarships to young women studying at universities. In eleven years they have sent over two million pounds to Afghanistan.

Island Adventures

The Hebrides are a bird watchers paradise, Golden eagles and Sea eagles call Uig home and it is usual to see these magnificent birds from the Byre windows. Corncrakes nest close by and their calls can be incessant in summer at night. Buzzards, merlins, ravens, dippers, woodcocks, grouse, snipe, golden plover, wrens, red throated divers, herons are all common. Being so close to the ocean, the common sea birds include gannets, terns, guillemots, razorbills, fulmars, great skuas, gulls, shags and innumerable waders. Nesting sites might be revealed to responsible birders. Deer often graze in the village.

Visit Great Bernera where you can cross a bridge over the wild Atlantic to view the Iron Age House, the Time and Tide Bell or if you enjoy walking there’s a three and a half hour walk from Valasay to Tobson and Bosta. Take in the world famous Standing Stones at Callanish, half way between Timsgarry and Stornoway. Based at Miavaig, using both large RIBs and a larger traditional fast boat, Seatrek offer boat trips. Visit the small uninhabited islands off Uig and, when the weather allows, trips to the Flannan Isles and the UNESCO World Heritage site of St Kilda which offer fantastic seabird spectacles each summer breeding season. Sea Harris and Kilda Cruises operate from Leverburgh in Harris. Whales, dolphins and basking sharks are often seen on boat trips and occasionally from the shore when the sea is calm. Stunning white sandy shell beaches, seventeen in all, range from secret coves to the amazing Uig Bay, next to the Byre, where you can go kayaking, surfing, kiting, or just exploring. Discover your own quiet cove and take a picnic. The wildlife is abundant and if you keep a lookout you are likely to see red deer, otters, seals and maybe the odd highland coo wandering by!

Walk through the Machair; carpets of wildflowers that bloom around the coastal areas of the islands, the name given to one of the rarest habitats in Europe and only occurring on exposed western coasts of Scotland and Ireland. Uig Bay is home to where the famous Uig Chessmen were discovered in 1831 buried in a sand bank. Book a private guided tour – ideal if you want to discover the islands secretive hidden historical places, helping you to achieve a clearer insight into the Islands wealth of archaeology and culture. Visit Abhainn Dearg whisky distillery which was started in 2008 and was the first legal whisky producer on the islands in almost two hundred years. For star gazers Uig boasts truly dark skies, also a good place to watch the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis.
