Loch Lomond and the Trossachs
In the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park the best known and beautiful expanse of water is Loch Lomond. The southern end of the loch is surrounded by fairly gentle rolling hills. As you travel northwards, you cross the highland fault line which signals a change in the rock types hence the scenery. Further to the north west you find the long sealochs and freshwater lochs and the rugged mountains more typical of the northern highlands. Loch Awe and Loch Long with Arrochar and the fabulous “Arrochar Alps” being typical examples.
The iconic “Bonnie Banks”
Across to the east you find the beautiful centre of the Trossachs with a variety of lochs, each with its own unique attractions. In the north east you come to Balquhidder, the home of Rob Roy MacGregor and finally to the north, the lands of the Campbells, MacNabs, and Stewarts by Loch Earn, Dochart and Tay. Loch Lomond stretches from its gentle southern end at Balloch to Ardlui, some twenty-one miles to the northwest. Loch Lomond, made famous by the song “The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond ” is one of the main attractions of the national park although you must leave time to explore the rest of the park. Loch Lomond is the largest inland expanse of water in Britain for boating. It has the advantage of being large and the safety of being enclosed, but without the disadvantages of tides, large swells and navigational problems. It provides areas sheltered enough for swimming and kayaking but open enough for water-skiing and sailing. The southern end of the loch has many islands to explore and plenty of sheltered anchorages. The north end of the loch, in contrast, provides long stretches of deep, open water.
Celebrations and dream weddings at Inchmurrin
Inchmurrin Island is a truly unique setting for a romantic wedding or celebration, whether indoors or outdoors in our marquee. Inchmurrin would be pleased to discuss your individual requirements.
Watersports
Inchmurrin is superbly placed for open-water swimming, kayaking, fishing, sailing, waterskiing and wakeboarding. Guests can berth their boats within sight of their apartment or use the beach in front of the house to get into the beautiful clear waters of Loch Lomond.
Fisherman’s paradise
As well as enjoying the peace and quiet, guests on holiday can occupy themselves by sailing, fishing, water skiing, boating and exploring the island. Loch Lomond is one of Scotland’s best lochs for salmon, sea trout and coarse fishing (especially pike). Salmon and pike of thirty pounds and sea trout of ten pounds are caught most years. With the introduction in recent years of the live bait “ruffe” the balance has changed with increasing numbers of pike and decreasing numbers of salmon and trout. The season for salmon and sea trout is 11 Feb to 31 Oct, fishing by fly or trolling with large bait for salmon and smaller bait for sea trout. The record salmon is 44lbs 8oz. The record sea trout is 22lbs 8oz. There is no close season for coarse fishing. Trolling from a moving boat is not allowed when coarse fishing. The record pike is 47lbs 11oz. Day and weekly game and coarse fishing angling permits can be purchased from Balmaha boat yard, tourist information centres, local hotels etc. The Angling map of Loch Lomond and season permits for game and coarse fishing can be purchased locally. Dinghies with engines and rods can be hired from Balmaha boat yard Pike and salmon boat trips can be arranged with Loch Lomond Fishing or premier leisure.
