About this listing

Situated in a secluded grove of wild apple and cherry trees, Wilderkin is a rejuvenating off-grid sanctuary, complete with a record player, books, a wood burner, and a fully stocked kitchen, you can relax in some of the most romantic scenery Scotland has to offer. Although inside is incredibly comfortable, the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape is the focus. For a hiking holiday, Wilderkin serves as an excellent home base. Peaceful both inside and out, Wilderkin is the perfect place to unwind.

In this calming oasis, you will find a king-size sunken bed outfitted with washed linen sheets and luxury down-filled bedding. For maximum relaxation after a full day, you will be able to indulge in a walk-in rainfall shower. Wilderkin can sleep two adults and welcomes babes-in-arms. For an extra fee, well-behaved dogs are also welcome to stay.

The kitchen has everything you need to get settled in including olive oil, coffee, and tea. There is also an induction hob and fridge. If your stay is within season, you can even experiment making your own crabapple jelly. For an energizing culinary adventure, you can try your hand at cooking in the outdoor fire pit with the cast-iron tripod skillet.

A large picture window in the living space provides an expansive view of the Pentland Hill Range. Because the cabin is entirely constructed from local larch, Douglas fir, and hemlock, you will feel connected with nature even when indoors. Stay cozy inside with the stylish wood burner, plenty of blankets, books, and a record player.

For the eco-conscious traveler, Wilderkin is kind to the environment as well as to your peace of mind. All of the electricity needed for your stay is generated via wind turbine. A compostable toilet, biodegradable shampoo, and biodegradable soap help ensure an environmentally friendly break. Electric car charging is available on request. To help provide an off-grid stay, there is no wi-fi on the property. However, if you need to stay connected with the outside world, the phone signal is reliable. For fresh organic produce, a farm shop with a cafe is only a five-minute drive away.

Although the interior may be utterly rejuvenating, the rugged outdoors are what make Wilderkin a true gem. Decompressing is as easy as carrying one of the handmade stools outside to soak up the birdsong. If you use the provided binoculars, you might be able to spot larks, curlews, peewits, and fieldfares. You may even see the neighbor’s friendly Highland cows and horses.

Surrounded by the Pentland Hill Range and Deepsyke Forest, there is never a shortage of stunning views. Because Wilderkin is a totally private retreat in the wild, you will need to bring a pair of sturdy boots or wellies to walk the short distance from your parking spot to the cabin. A wheelbarrow is provided to transport heavier luggage from your vehicle to Wilderkin.

If you choose to venture beyond this restful retreat, the charming hamlet of Carlops is only a two-kilometer (1.2 mile) walk away. Hop in your vehicle for a brief 30-minute journey, and you can explore all the Michelin-starred food and exciting activities that Edinburgh has to offer. Visit Edinburgh Castle to experience a trip to Scotland’s storied history. You can choose to wander the castle on your own or book a tour to learn all about one of Europe’s most iconic castles.

Like numerous artists and poets, you could also let yourself be inspired by Roslin Glen’s wild and enchanting scenery. While you are there, you can tour Rosslyn Chapel and try to find all the “green men.” Beyond Roslin Glen, the Pentland Hills host numerous trails each imbued with historic landmarks. Located on the ancient Newhall Estate, Peggy’s Pool offers a picturesque waterfall and wild swimming. Best of all, Peggy’s Pool is close enough to walk from Wilderkin. If anyone in your party is a lover of Scottish poetry, you can try to identify all the references in Allan Ramsay’s “The Good Shepherd.” For a once-in-a-lifetime artistic experience, Jupiter Artland Sculpture Park features both permanent work and exciting temporary exhibitions.

You do not have to be lost to wander the nearby sprawling seven-acres of The Secret Herb Garden. Not only home to over 600 herb varieties, The Secret Herb Garden is also host to a distillery where you can taste a variety of gins made entirely of ingredients found on the property. Bring home a taste of your holiday adventures with botanical teas and herbal soaps. In a celebration of local produce, succulent seasonal delicacies are available in the cafe bistro. Because the cafe is situated inside one of the glass greenhouses, you are in for an unforgettable dining treat.

Whether you choose to spend your holiday relaxing amidst swaying trees and birdsong or exploring the bustling city of Edinburgh, Wilderkin is a magnificent home away from home. Perfect for those who wish to be conscious of the environment, the many eco-friendly touches make this cottage an inviting and relaxing retreat. With plenty to keep everyone busy inside or outside, a stay at Wilderkin is a wonderful place to soak in the rugged natural beauty found only in the Scottish countryside.
