Ward End Cottage and its sister cottage, Farm Cottage, form part of the historic Newtonmill Estate, where former agricultural buildings have been carefully renovated while preserving their traditional charm. Inside, the cottage combines warm, contemporary interiors with original features, exposed stone work and a relaxed open-plan layout. A well-equipped kitchen and open-plan living space are centred around a wood-burning stove provide a peaceful place to unwind after a day exploring, not to mention the relaxation room – complete with sofa and feature bath for you to enjoy at your leisure. The king-size bedroom and modern bathroom complete the cottage. Windows look out across the surrounding garden (fully-fenced) and towards a small winding burn, bringing the landscape and wildlife into view.

Sustainability sits at the heart of Newtonmill. Ward End Cottage is powered by renewable energy, including solar panels and an air-source heat pump that feed underfloor heating in all rooms, while eco-friendly toiletries and cleaning products are used throughout. Fresh flowers and seasonal produce from the Estate’s historic walled garden are provided when possible.

Newtonmill is a small, family-run estate and we enjoy sharing its history and landscape with our guests. Access to parts of the wider estate, including the beautiful walled garden, can be arranged by prior agreement, and we are always happy to offer guided tours for those interested in learning more about the property and its restoration. The estate also features several unique spaces that can be hired for private experiences, including the atmospheric Whisky Lodge with its cosy log burner, alongside other historic buildings that have been sensitively restored.

The estate is ideally located for exploring the very best of eastern Scotland. Within easy reach are the sweeping beaches of Lunan Bay and St Cyrus, the Angus Glens and the Cairngorms National Park, offering exceptional walking, cycling and wildlife experiences. The area is also rich in heritage and culture, with nearby highlights including Glamis Castle, Dunnottar Castle, and the vibrant cultural scene of Dundee with the V&A museum and waterfront.

For those interested in Scotland’s renowned drinks heritage, several celebrated distilleries lie close by, including Glencadam, Fettercairn and Arbikie. Golf enthusiasts will also find themselves within easy reach of world-class courses such as Carnoustie and Montrose Links.

This cottage is absolutely beautiful. Luxurious and in pristine condition. [The family] has lovingly restored the cottage and blended in modern styling with the traditional. With underfloor heating throughout and a log burner fire in the living room we relaxed in glorious warmth as the winter storm blew outside in this well insulated home. After a cold and wet walk, soaking in the large hot bath in the ‘spa room’ was a luxury. [The family] has thought of everything – so well appointed with clean and modern kitchen equipment. Whilst positioned next to a B road we didn’t get bothered by any traffic. A large spacious bedroom and very comfortable bed provided a great night sleep. In the summer the garden will be lovely with a stream running past. it’s a perfect place for a couple and for a short or long stay. [The family] was very responsive to my various enquiries and messages. We hope to be able to return!

An absolutely perfect place to stay! The house is beautifully finished and furnished with modern appliances and an utterly luxurious shower room and bathroom (and a Bluetooth mirror!). We loved the wood burner and very comfy sofa – so cozy. We could not fault Ward End – and wished we’d booked for longer. It is secluded, relaxing, and the perfect get away, but also in a great location to explore the stunning area, for long walks through the hills, and meanders along the coast. The tour of Glencadam whiskey distillery (just five minute drive away) is not to be missed. [The] family were so helpful and really went above and beyond in making sure we had everything we needed, and giving us a tour of the estate. The wine and biscuits left for us were very much appreciated. 10/10 – highly recommend, would love to go back!

The house was absolutely lovely, one of the best places I’ve stayed. Everything was super modern and the house itself was completely private. We loved getting the fire on in the evening and everything was left so it was easy to light up. Overall the stay was all 5 stars and would highly recommend. We’ll be back!

The cottage was beautiful. Arriving and the lights were on and the place was warm felt so welcoming. I fell in love immediately. You can tell this is a historic building but they have renovated it so beautifully. It was warm, and extremely comfortable. The furnishings were high quality and it was overall a very enjoyable stay. All these things mattered a great deal to me, as it poured of rain for days. The cottage is next to [a] road but isn’t too busy in the evening so that wasn’t a bother. I did reach out about exploring the estate and was delighted at the offer of a tour, which would have been fantastic. There was the suggestion for another walk, but that was a car drive away, so that’s something to consider. It was a short drive into Brechin and Edzell so felt very away, without being far away 😊

Such a lovely place which is in a quiet location, it has a nice fireplace and the utilities are good quality and made cooking really easy. We had ran out of toilet paper and needed laundry products, communication to do this was great and quick. Defo a place that I will miss, thanks for making it a lovely honeymoon for me and my husband 🙂
