About this listing

A walkers’ paradise and relaxing retreat, Tigh a’ Mhaide is a private annex to a historic cottage with peace, tranquillity and sublime walks from the doorstep; explore lochside and woodland in the heart of The Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park.

Winner of Scottish Newcomer of the Year, 2020 in the LUXlife Magazine 5th annual resorts and retreats awards.

Tigh a’ Mhaide is perfect for sharing. This quaint, beautifully-presented traditional cottage radiates charm and tranquillity, sitting in an idyllic village location. It sleeps four in two upstairs bedrooms configured either as a king-size and double, or double and twin to suit guests’ requirements. Both bedrooms have ensuite shower rooms and built-in wardrobes. Downstairs is an open-plan kitchen-dining-living area, fully equipped with all that you might need for a comfortable stay. The accommodation also has a modern, fully-fitted kitchen with electric hob, fan oven, microwave, dishwasher, fridge with freezer compartment and a De’Longhi espresso machine perfect for your morning coffee fix. The lounge has comfortable seating for four and fully extendable dining table, Freeview satellite TV, Blu-Ray DVD player and a selection of DVDs as well as a comprehensive selection of board and card games. The bathroom is a fully-tiled wet room and there is also a laundry space with washer/drier, iron & ironing board, clothes airer. You’ll find a gorgeous selection of luxury, Sea Kelp toiletries and crisp, white, cotton bed-linen with fluffy towels. Bedrooms have built-in wardrobes with full-length mirrors, a hairdryer in each bedroom and there are extra pillows and throws available if required. For families, a travel cot, highchair and stair gate are also available on request. Tigh a’ Mhaide has free and unlimited Wi-Fi. Well behaved dogs are welcome but we ask owners to observe a small number of rules for their pet. Dogs should not be left alone in the house (unless in a dog crate) or be unsupervised in the grounds.

Five-star fun in the Trossachs

Bens A’an, Venue and Ledi are within easy reach and the Trossachs leg of National Cycle Route 7 is nearby. Outside you will find croquet, a rough nine-hole putting course (mini-golf) and a chalet-style children’s playhouse, perfect for keeping the littlies occupied on holiday. There’s also a table-tennis table for some friendly post dinner competition or, for something more relaxing, guests are welcome to enjoy the bluebell woods out front. Look out for red squirrels, pine martens, badgers or deer who share the woodland around the cottage. Tigh a’ Mhaide is one of the oldest cottages in the village and is a natural and wild retreat from the hustle and bustle of modern life. The property does include open water (a pond close to the house, a river and a stream) and a short access track open to the road so children and pets must therefore be closely supervised at all times.

An extensive network of woodland paths, including the Great Trossachs Path, offers walking, hiking and cycling for all abilities only a few minutes from your front door. Nearby peaks Ben A’an, Ben Ledi and Ben Venue offer days out with spectacular views over the Trossachs countryside. If swinging through the trees appeals, Go Ape near Aberfoyle is less than 15 minutes away by car and features two of the longest zip wires in the UK. If you prefer to relax by the water, you can cruise on Loch Katrine, made famous by Sir Walter Scott, or follow Robert the Bruce and Mary, Queen of Scots in taking a boat to Inchmahome Priory on the Lake of Menteith. Fishing by permit is available on nearby Lochs Achray and Venachar, and for more adventurous water sports, the Loch Ard Outdoor Adventure Centre at Kinlochard is 30 minutes away. You can also explore Outlander and Outlaw/King country with a visit to medieval Doune Castle (the on-screen Castle Leoch and Douglas Castle) less than 30 minutes away or Stirling Castle, royal residence and ancient military stronghold, around 40 minutes away. For those who like a wee tipple we recommend three distilleries in the area; McQueen Gin, Deanston Whisky and Glengoyne, all of which offer tours.

Brig o’ Turk is a quiet, rural village about seven miles west of Callander and eight miles north of Aberfoyle in the heart of The Trossachs, one of the most beautiful yet accessible areas of the Scottish Highlands.  Surrounded by native woodland close to An Dubh-Abhainn (The Black Water), the area has been a favourite destination for visitors since Sir Walter Scott published The Lady of the Lake, a narrative poem set at nearby Loch Katrine. Popular with walkers, cyclists and nature lovers keen to explore the lochs, glens, peaks and woodland of The Trossachs, Brig o’ Turk also offers an away-from-it-all destination for those seeking a relaxing break.  The village and surrounding countryside also have rich historical, literary and artistic connections. Nearby Glen Finglas was a royal hunting forest for Scottish kings and nobles for three centuries, and Queen Victoria visited Tigh a’ Mhaide during a private holiday to The Trossachs in 1869. The area is associated with the Glasgow Boys group of artists who took inspiration from the landscape. At the west end of the village is the Byre Inn, an attractive village inn that also serves as a restaurant. Close by is the “bicycle tree” which derives its name from an enveloped bicycle left leaning against it by the village blacksmith.

For a holiday amid the stunning scenery of the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park, whether quietly relaxing, energetically active or somewhere in between, Tigh a’ Mhaide offers sublime walking and cycling from your doorstep as well as quiet relaxation.

Guests Comments :

“The accommodation is very good – incredibly clean and with great quality of such things as beds, towels, toiletries, kitchen facilities. In the middle of a wet February we were always warm and comfortable. It was our first time in the area and we found wonderful landscapes even in bad weather – we felt really refreshed after our short stay.”

“The house is a perfect hideaway in the Trossachs especially in stormy weather! The location provided great access to all the walks. The house itself is superb. It is cosy, comfy, very clean and beautifully decorated with great facilities, it really feels like home away from home. Hilary was a prefect host, meeting us at the property to help check us in, and she even left us a helpful welcome basket. We would love to stay again.”

“My wife, our daughter, dog and myself had a lovely 3 days stay. It was warm and homely and a perfect location for getting out and seeing the beautiful Trossachs.”

“Hilary’s place is spotlessly clean with everything you need. Plenty of information on places to visit. There is a pub in walking distance which serves good food. The beds are so comfy. Would definitely recommend a stay.”

“Beautiful wee cottage in the heart of Loch Lomond – great base for Ben A’an hiking. The cottage looks newly renovated and has every possible thing you could need including books, DVDs and extra bits and bobs in the kitchen. Highly recommend. Extremely clean.”
