About this listing

A magical stay awaits you in an old 1850’s converted Byre, nestled directly under the magnificent An Teallach Mountain Range in stunning Highland wilderness – pitch pine ceilings, dreamy spiral staircase and luxury bolthole for two.

A Magical Bolthole

Stepping Stones offers the perfect romantic retreat for you and your partner to spend quality time together whilst surrounded by stunning countryside settings. Head through the gates and drive alongside a small stream. On the left you’ll see the owners accommodation and attached alongside there is an additional building which is your highland escape for two with the flexibility to accommodate one extra guest by request.  Step inside the porch area of your accommodation, an ideal relaxing place with views over the river, and into the heart of Stepping Stones, which has been tastefully furnished with thoughtful touches throughout. Inside is welcoming and quirky where to the right of the room you can find remnants of the property’s past; a former traditional gift shop and painting gallery, this area is still immersed with culture through its many books on offer, making it the ideal spot to unwind and enjoy a good read. To the left of this is the sitting room with an accompanying dining area and the well-equipped kitchen with electric oven, two ring hob, grill, microwave, coffee machine and dishwasher. The woodburning stove is a cosy spot to curl up together after a days adventure and an ideal setting for a romantic dining experience.

When the night draws to a close head up the spiral staircase and into the bedroom, with sloping eaves and a king-size bed, this area is a tranquil and serene place to unwind after a days adventure. Open the window and listen to the soothing sounds of the river nearby. A few steps away from the Cottage is the lovely Log Cabin which houses the main bathroom with it’s walk-in shower, all the utilities are there, has a large seating area with tea/coffee facilities and double doors that open out to a small decking area overlooking the river, the woodland garden and hills beyond. It’s a great drying room too with underfloor heating and lots of space to leave backpacks, hiking gear, wetsuits etc. The opportunity for wild swimming is amazing as you are surrounded by rivers and waterfalls with wonderful crystal clear pools, and the sea loch is only 3 miles down the road.

Perfect for Summer and Autumnal nights Stepping Stones has a fire pit for guests use where you can choose to toast marshmallows under the warmth of a blanket with the tranquil sounds of the stream running in front of you. Take a stroll over the lawned garden and across the garden’s footbridge for a lovely natural walk through the trees, along the Dundonnell riverside and featuring views of the scenic surrounding hills, and also of the magnificent An Teallach mountain range, with plenty of opportunity to spot wildlife. There’s outdoor furniture dotted about for guests use. If you fancy a day out in a vibrant village head to Ullapool, it now stands as an area with various points of interest including its own museum, a play park, a golf club, and a busy harbour offering cruises across the Scottish waters. The amazing and spectacular Corrieshalloch Gorge is on the way to Ullapool, only 11 miles from your cottage.

5 Star Location

Stepping Stones is situated on the NC500, a 500 mile route of stunning coastal scenery, one of the world’s most beautiful road trips, and is 22 miles from the fishing village of Ullapool which nestles on the shores of Loch Broom and overlooks the Summer Isles. It is the largest settlement in Wester Ross. This picturesque town was designed in the 18th Century by Thomas Telford and boasts delightful, whitewashed buildings and is also the main terminus for the ferry to Stornoway, the principal town in the Western Isles. The town offers some lovely pubs and restaurants, a range of shops including a well-stocked supermarket, a challenging coastal golf course and a museum and Visitor Centre on West Argyle Street for those wishing to discover more about the area. The museum covers a range of topics including crofting, fishing, emigration and the history of the town and many other tourist attractions an easy drive away. Inverness is just 57 miles from the property. The National Trust for Scotland Inverewe Gardens, created by Osgood MacKenzie who collected plants from all parts of the world, is a particular highlight.

Stepping Stones offers a uniquely private spot and provides the perfect base for exploring the hidden corners of the North West of Scotland.

Guests Comments :

“Beautiful location – at the foot of An Teallach, right next to a river, lots of open land surrounding the house and great walks straight from the front door. The house is lovely – recently renovated and full of character. Perfect for my rainy October week as it’s cheerful, bright and warm. Lots of thoughtful and fun touches too, from the lovely and very welcoming owners who live next door. The few steps outside to the shower room and laundry (in a new cabin) was actually really nice as it’s private and inside is warm with underfloor heating and a great wet room shower. The nearest shop is quite a drive so be sure to bring food.”

“The cottage is immaculate and well thought out, lots of cosy little spots indoors and outdoors to spend time relaxing, no matter what the weather. The hosts are lovely and welcoming and seem to have thought of everything you could need for an interesting holiday – they’re also full of good recommendations for things to do locally. Being so close to the footpath up An Teallach is a massive bonus – it meant we could maximise the daylight at this time of year in order to get a day up the mountain. We also loved the quirkiness of the log cabin shower/utility/coffee space, it felt luxurious and we called it our daily trip the ‘spa’! Would 100% recommend this property to other couples/singles wanting a week away from it all amongst beautiful scenery.”

“We loved the cottage which had everything you’ll need, all appliances are easy to work and are in the best condition. The cabin which houses the shower room and utilities is fantastic – no concerns at all about it being separate, actually it adds to it. There are walks around for all abilities up hills and along the riverbank but the ground over the garden bridge is a place where you can lose yourself in a labyrinth of paths with some unexpected delights. The bird feeding station in the garden attracts many birds and a red squirrel made an appearance most days. No need to travel very far as there’s enough on the doorstep to enjoy all day long. Aida and Brian are perfect hosts, their creation of Stepping Stones is an idyllic treasure.”

“Really cosy place to come back to and watch the wildlife in the garden (including red squirrels).”

“It felt more like stepping into a hotel room than a rented holiday home and we instantly felt welcome. It outstandingly unique and we loved every minute of our stay.”

“A perfect place to relax and enjoy the surrounding views. Check out the dragon in the garden or take a walk up the river that runs past the cottage. A great base for outdoor walks. The cottage is five minutes drive from the start point of An Teallach. Even better that you can walk from the cottage to Sheneval or the Corrie Toll An Lochan. So many walks for those of different abilities are close by. Aida was a great source of knowledge of local walks and ideas for days out. The cottage was very comfortable and clean. All the mod cons you could ask for as well as some unique features – the spiral staircase and beautiful stone worktops. Wood burning stove was great for winding down in an evening with a beer or wine to end the day. The separate cabin for showering and utilities was great as a dry out room after a long day or just a cosy place to chill and enjoy a beer or coffee while looking out to the river. I would highly recommend, as the place exceeded all our expectations and we will hopefully be back soon.”
