Your wilderness cottage
This beautiful wilderness cottage was originally built to house Estate staff on the magnificent 20,000 acre Achentoul Estate. Having undergone careful renovation with all the modern comforts guests will experience the quickest relax to ensure the perfect base for their next highland adventure. The sitting room is designed to offer a warm and inviting social space with comfortable seating centred round the cosy wood-burning stove. Inside you will find a smart wood-panelled kitchen which is well equipped including fridge, freezer, hob, breakfast bar and dishwasher and there is an integrated dining area for social evenings and relaxing family dinners.
Looking out across tranquil loch views from the large picture windows you can immerse yourself in stunning highland scenery. Off the central hallway is the family bathroom with a traditional panelled bath and also on this level are two smart twin bedrooms, both of which can convert into double rooms to suit guests own requirements. Upstairs is another bright double bedroom with large roof windows and stunning loch-views. Just across the landing is a modern and spacious shower room with walk-in shower which works also well as a guest dressing room.
Guests will love the extensive grassed garden with views out over open fields and down to the Strath of Kildonan and across to the loch. There’s even a BBQ and outdoor furniture for alfresco dining so you may want to pick up some charcoal for enjoying those long summer nights. For lovers of nature and wide-open spaces you won’t get much better, as your holiday home is sited in one of Scotland’s last wildernesses which reaches far across Caithness and Sutherland also known as the Flow Country.
Nature, wildlife and fishing
If fishing is your passion the you will love the fishing opportunities here with trout fishing available on six lochs or try casting a fly for salmon fishing on the world-renowned River Helmsdale (tickets available in Helmsdale for the Association water). Other lochs are widely available locally through nearby Badenloch Estate, Borrobol and Forsinard Flyfishers Club. Hikers and walkers have plenty of opportunity to lace up and head for the hills, go biking or jump in the car with the North Coast 500 close by to explore. Immerse yourself in nature with the opportunity to see red deer from your cottage door, golden eagles and a rich tapestry of wild local flora and fauna on your doorstep. For special nights out the nearest restaurants are located in Helmsdale or Melvich approx. 20 miles drive. For the sea-foodies in your party it is often possible to arrange to buy lobster, crab or langoustine direct from boats at local harbours.
Ruathair Cottage has everything covered for the most relaxing of stays, whether enjoying the stunning scenery, reconnection time with family or to marvel at the wonder of nature. Star studded skies with little or no light pollution offer the chance to explore the night skies or catch a glimpse of a shooting star above.
