Faire Chaolais is our contemporary, architect designed, eco-friendly self-catering holiday cottage in Morar in the west Highlands of Scotland, on the ‘Road to the Isles’. Completed in 2014 the house sleeps six and has two double bedrooms, one room with bunk beds, one master bathroom and two en-suite shower rooms. A large living space on the upper floor with two large leather sofas, dining area and wood burning stove makes the most of the spectacular view, even in winter.
Award winning architects Dualchas designed the house, adapting the concept of the traditional Highland agricultural building for modern living and turning it towards the views of the ‘Silver Sands’ and Isle of Rum through the whole gable end. Faire Chaolais sits on former croft land, with passing ‘Harry Potter’ steam trains on the beautiful West Highland railway line above the house. Indeed it is possible to arrive by train and hire a car from the local garage.
We frequently see deer in the grounds, and for wild swimmers the house is within walking distance of the beach on both sides of the river Morar (tidal on the north side) and a short drive from beaches at Camusdarach (featured in the film “Local Hero”) and Traigh.
The house was designed to minimise heat loss and has a heat recovery ventilation unit and underfloor heating supplied by an air source heat pump; with a wood burning stove in the living area it is warm and cosy throughout the year.
We have original contemporary artworks by local ceramicist Maggie Zerafa, figurative artist Damian Callan, wildlife and landscape artist Carry Ackroyd and others. Faire Chaolais was featured in the November 2015 edition of Homes and Interiors Scotland. They wrote: “This is a place to come and clear your head, where less is more. And then you can go back to your usual life refreshed.”
