About this listing

Wildlife, beaches and pure relaxation

This beautifully refurbished 100-year-old croft house sleeping 6, set in the village of Bracara offers spectacular views overlooking Loch Morar, where you can watch the hills turn from malt whisky gold to royal purple through the seasons.

Bracara Cottage has 2 large bedrooms, one with a king size bed with stunning views of Loch Morar and another with a double bed and a sofa bed. It also has a smaller bedroom with bunk beds, ideal for the younger members in your party. Did we tell you about the views! . The house offers a main bathroom upstairs and a w.c. cloakroom downstairs. There is a newly fitted modern dining/kitchen and it is well stocked with a Nespresso coffee maker, dishwasher, fridge freezer, gas hob, oven and microwave. A washing machine and tumble dryer are located in the utility area. The lounge offers a relaxing environment with a log burning fire and an additional dining area. There is double-glazing throughout and full central- heating. You will have access to free WIFI, Freeview TV, Xbox 360 (inch range of games), wide range of DVDs, selection of books and games. There is also a hairdryer and GHD straightener for guests use in the cottage. The house is set within a croft and its own fenced grounds with ample parking spaces for two vehicles at the side of the house. There is access to the hillside and croft land straight from the house.

A wildly natural setting

Bracara Cottage is located in the remote west coast highlands of Scotland. The house is surrounded by trees to the back and a mature garden at the front with a seating area and washing drying area to the side, there is also a stream that flows at the side of the Garden with access to the hillside and croft land straight from the house.

It is approx. 45 miles from Fort William, 3 miles from Morar, 7 miles from Mallaig and Arisaig. Loch Morar has its own unusual inhabitant Morag, a pun on the name of the loch, Morag is often referred to as ‘Nessie’s cousin’, (The Loch Ness Monster) with Loch Morar just 70 miles from Loch Ness. First reported in 1887 – over 80 years after the first sighting of the Loch Ness Monster, Morag has been seen over 30 times since. In 1948, a ‘peculiar, serpent-like creature about 20ft long’ was reported by a group of people in a boat, in the same location as the sighting in 1887. The Loch Ness Investigation Bureau have taken a keen interest in these waters having expanded its search to include the nearby Loch Morar in the early 1970s.

Family adventures and stunning walking

Harry Potter fans will be excited to learn that they can follow in the wizard’s footsteps and take the Jacobite steam train for a day trip on the stunning railway line across the Glenfinnan monument. Plenty of stunning walks and paths to explore or try the circular route to Tarbet and catch the Mallaig Ferry back up Loch Nevis (Gaelic for Heaven). Take a stroll along the silvery sugar white sands at Morar, immortalised in the Burt Lancaster classic film ‘Local Hero’ or head to Mallaig for fresh fish and chips on the pier. Kayak hire is available from Arisaig, where you can take in the shoreline secrets and see the natural habitat of our coastal wildlife. There’s also a mountain to climb, the highest in Scotland, Ben Nevis; or you can simply take the relaxing way up by gondola with lunch at the top on the highest mountain in Scotland.

Spectacular wildlife and bird watching is to be had at Bracara Cottage with golden eagle and eagle sightings nearby. Look out across to Eilean Bàn (“white island”), an unheralded isle on Loch Morar. Plunging to depths of 1000 feet (400 feet deeper than Loch Ness), Loch Morar is the deepest fresh water loch in Scotland. Eilean Bàn has been left untouched for the past 200 years, and as a consequence has become a jungle, brimming with giant conifers and voluminous hollies. There’s also an Xbox 360 for guests use. Traigh Golf course offers a challenging 9-hole golf course for golfing enthusiasts or you can choose to visit the many beaches nearby and explore rock pools with the family. In the winter or summer, Nevis Range offers skiing and hosts the downhill MTB (Mountain Bike championships) as well as biking courses and trails and tracks with a great bike hire facility.

Mallaig is only a short car journey away where you can catch the ferry to Skye and the small Isles. There are spectacular beaches nearby including: Silver Sands of Morar; Camusdaroch, Traigh and many more. You’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to choosing somewhere special to eat out. There are many good restaurants in Mallaig as well as places for light lunch and the freshest of fish, most landed or dived for, the day you dine. Folk music figures highly and you can catch a music session held on Sunday afternoons in the Crofters Bar in the Arisiag Hotel. Arisaig House offers delicious dining by reservations, a grand old estate house with an interesting past having been requisitioned during the war by the ex SOE (Special Operations Executive) to use as a commando base in training men and women.

For family adventures romantic breaks, action packed days or total relaxation Bracara Cottage offers a holiday for all ages, where truly special memories are made.

Guest Comments :

“Sarah’s house really exceeded our expectations and was even better than it appeared in the photos. It was decorated really tastefully, and to a really high spec. It was also very well equipped and cooking for a large group was really easy. The location is perfect, with views over Loch Morar (stunning in the morning when you get up) and it’s very close to the sea. We enjoyed walking near the house, as well as taking the car to the coast. The extensive garden was also a plus, and is perfect for kids to play in. Sarah’s communication was really reliable, and she always responded promptly. We would definitely consider renting this house again!””A day before we had our first kayaking tour, nearby on the Isle of Skye, floating along with seals – this was the only thing that was as amazing as your place! For those teenagers that are not that keen into such an incredible rural experience, it was yet a cosy place with lots of good movies and a stunning view with lovely sheep everywhere. Harry Potter for the youngsters, ‘Local Hero’ – beach for us parents. Just unspeakably beautiful – we dream of coming back to you!”

“Beautiful cottage in a stunning location. Absolutely loved our stay here. Didn’t want to leave! Amazing place as close to nature as it an be. Clean house, resourceful, enjoyed the stay. A very special place. Beautiful nature, great apartment.”

“Amazing house and stunning location! House is beautiful, kitchen is more than well equipped, couches are comfy for after a long day exploring and everyone slept well in the beds. Can’t wait to go back! Kids loved the fact that our neighbours were sheep and there was lots for them to explore.”

“We had a great time. we could do many walks. the house is beautiful and the view unforgettable! we hope to come back some day. Everything is perfect and very comfortable. Thank you for all your presents. We all enjoyed it even if it is far from the city but it is the charm and calm that is nice.”

“When I first contacted Sarah, it was in a panic, as the other accommodation we had booked in Arisaig was cancelled at the last minute. Sarah responded quickly and was incredibly helpful, doing her very best to cater to our odd party-size, even recommending neighbouring properties that we could let in the event that Bracara was not enough. We arrived to the most lovely welcome gift, and were blown away by the facilities, cleanliness and idyllic location. We had the most perfect stay, and the Canadian guests had a wonderful introduction to the West Coast of Scotland. Thank you so much – we definitely hope to be back, and would recommend Bracara Cottage to anyone!”

“An excellent cottage- beautiful situation, nicely refurbished and very well equipped. I would highly recommend.”

“Well equipped cottage with beautiful views from the garden. Although you would need a car, the location is only 15 mins away from Mallaig and the stunning white beaches around Morar and Arisaig. We visited Rum and Eigg by the Calmac ferry out of Mallaig, and went sea kayaking around Arisaig. Sitting above Loch Morar, the cottage has recently been fully refurbished to a high standard. Both the weather and the midges were kind to us, and we were sad to leave. A great week.”
