A Stunning location

Aird Farm is situated three miles from the little Scottish village of Ardfern in Argyll and is a traditional Scottish holiday home nestling amongst some of Scotland’s most stunning scenery. Aird Farm is situated at the end of Craignish Peninsula looking onto the Isles of Jura, Mull, Luing and Scarba with a view of the Straits of Corryvreckan whirlpool, which is the well known whirlpool between Jura and Scarba.

Aird House and Aird Steading Cottage form part of Aird Farm a traditional hill farm of 1500 acres with sheep and cattle being the main enterprises. A fabulous setting, there are many walks on the farm that guests can enjoy providing stunning views over Jura, Knapdale and Loch Craignish. A short walk takes you to the miles of private shoreline with pebbly beaches and the opportunity to view wildlife, birdlife or just relax and enjoy the peace and solitude.

Aird Farm Cottages enjoy an elevated position at the end of Craignish peninsula offering stunning views over the Sound of Jura to Mull and Gulf of Corryvreckan Whirlpool the tidal race between Jura and Scarba.  The Dorus Mhor (meaning the big door) is another tidal race a mile walk from the Aird and where the first steamboat, the Comet went down in 1820. The village of Ardfern is well known as a popular yachting haven and a local hotel (Galley of Lorne) which has a restaurant serving bar and evening meals. The village also has a shop and the nearby village of Craobh Haven has a pub, seafood restaurant and offers water sports. Ardfern Riding Centre offers the opportunity to try western riding, trekking and lessons. Arduaine gardens and Kilmartin Glen and Museum are within a short distance from Aird Farm.

Your accommodation is set amongst some of the most stunning scenery in Scotland. Seals, dolphins and otters can often be seen in Loch Beag as well as buzzards, oystercatchers and many other different species of bird life. Mid Argyll is famed for its Neolithic burial grounds (one can be found at Aird Farm itself) and intriguing standing stones. Kilmartin Museum (in Kilmartin village), is an archaeology centre showing intriguing views of pre-historic Scottish life. Near Kilmartin there is also Carnassaire Castle and Dunadd Fort. Craignish peninsula is steeped in history and archaeological remains at Kilmarie Chapel which has a number of carved stones dating from the 13th century is at Kirton, one mile from Aird.  Arduaine Gardens, boat trips from Ardfern and Craobh Haven Marinas are all within easy reach of Aird. Oban is just 27 miles by car, with boat trips to Scotland’s seafood capital with steamers, plenty of shops and ferries to the Scottish Islands of Mull, Tiree and Colonsay.

Rich in wildlife

An array of wildlife can be found in the local area such as seals, otters, occasionally bottlenose dolphins, roe deer and more recently red deer. Red squirrels are often sighted and can be found at Kilmarie Chapel and surrounding woods. Birdlife such as buzzards, oystercatchers, herons, gannets, golden eagles and the majestic sea eagles flying overhead are often seen in the surrounding area. The Sound of Jura is part of a Marine Protected Area, which supports an impressive range of birds and mammals including the endangered flapper skate. In May 2019, in conjunction with local environmental groups, the Argyll Coast and Islands has become the first Mission Blue Hope Spot in the UK providing greater understanding and protection of the marine environment. Having been identified as one of the best sites in Scotland for Marsh Fritillary Butterfly; the farm is now being managed to enhance and protect habitat for endangered butterflies and moths. A delightful haven for wildflowers at Aird Farm guests can see orchids, thrift, devil’s bit scabious, eyebright, bluebells and primroses.

Guest Reviews:

“Very comfortable well equipped cottage, great location to get away for a week to relax and enjoy the beautiful scenery. A really nice touch were the fresh farm eggs, fruit loaf and a bottle of wine waiting for us on arrival. Although the weather was wet and windy for part of the time we enjoyed our stay and hope to return.”

“A house with spectacular views, the house is very cosy and comfortable and well equipped. Alison and Malcolm are very friendly and helpful host.”

“Aird Farm House was an absolute dream, from the moment we arrived the Farm House was warm and welcoming. Its abit of a trip – but well worth it. Very spacious, comfortable and what a view!! There was homemade fruit loaf, fresh eggs from the farm hens and a rather enjoyable bottle of wine!! We woke up with not only to some of the farm animals grazing outside but the views across the landscape where amazing, it honestly took my breath away, simply beautiful. Alison and Malcolm were close by if we needed anything at all, but not intrusive, we’re so looking forward to our next visit – hopefully not too far away, fantastic break.”

“Thanks to Malcolm and Alison for having us at their splendid retreat. They themselves are great hosts, but not in anyway intrusive. The cottage is of a high specification in many ways,, a lot of attention has been paid to detail of its design and facilities. However, it’s the views from its windows and it’s exceptional location.
It’s at the end of a couple of miles no thru road to an outlook in to an ever changing landscape, that is an absolute bliss.”

“Otter watch of our own is down the hill, amazing but be prepared to be vigilant. It will rain, get over it.
Wondrous and wonderful location, we feel privileged to have stayed there and will be back. Almost I selfishly don’t want to tell anyone about it but Malcolm’s and Alison’s hard graft must be rewarded. Incidentally, the eggs are stupendous. We will certainly be back, missing it already.”

“My family and I have been returning to this beautiful home for a number of years. The house is set on top of a small hill which results in the kitchen and living room having an incredible view over Scarba and Jura. The house itself is incredibly warm, clean and comfortable. Malcolm and Allison, who own the house, are incredibly kind and interesting people. Aird Farm is the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. A wonderful break.”
